Proper tattoo aftercare isn’t optional. It’s what ensures your tattoo heals beautifully, stays vibrant, and avoids infection. Here’s everything you need to know to take care of your new ink like a pro.
Every tattoo artist at Santiago Ink gives detailed aftercare guidance tailored to your tattoo’s placement, size, and style. Your healing starts the second you leave the studio — don’t wing it. We’ve seen the good, the bad, and the itchy. Trust the pros.
Your tattoo is technically an open wound. Keep the bandage on for at least 2–4 hours to protect it from bacteria. When it’s time to remove it, wash your hands first, then gently clean the tattoo with lukewarm water and mild, fragrance-free soap.
Pro tip: Pat it dry with a clean towel. Don’t rub!
Use a thin layer of tattoo-specific ointment or a recommended healing balm. At Santiago Ink, we suggest products that are proven to help skin heal without clogging pores or dulling your ink.
Too much? You risk suffocating the tattoo.
Too little? You’ll dry it out and possibly scab.
Find the sweet spot — and reapply as needed.
Yes, it’s going to itch. Yes, it might peel. No, you cannot scratch it. Avoid swimming pools, hot tubs, and long baths for at least 2 weeks. And definitely keep it out of direct sun — UV rays can fade your new tattoo faster than you can say “touch-up.”
Most tattoos take 2–4 weeks to fully heal. During this time, wear loose clothing, keep it clean, and trust the process. If you notice signs of infection or anything odd, contact your artist right away.
